Major John L. Smith, Marine Fighting Squadron 223 (VMF-223), fought in the air battle for Guadalcanal.He scored 19 victories in the crucial August-September 1942 period and was awarded the Medal of Honor for his leadership and his personal achievements in aerial combat.
The Army’s surgeon general, Lt. Gen. Eric Schoomaker, and 200 others saluted 52 medics who have received the Medal of Honor. They met at Fort Sam Houston’s Pergola, a permanent exhibit of ambulances and medevac helicopters, to break ground on a Medal of Honor Walk. A veteran of World War II, Watkins was awarded the medal for his conspicuous leadership during the Battle of Yongsan .
Colonel Mitchell Paige was born in Charleroi, Pennsylvania, August 31, 1918. He enlisted in the Marine Corps September 1, 1936 and went to recruit training at Parris Island, South Carolina. He is the sole surviving Medal of Honor recipient from the ground battle for Guadalcanal, America's first ground offensive of WWII.
